Database for structural seismic design

Since 2014

Dr. Cai has been working on a seismic database since 2014, which considers most of structural elements. These databases are based on the literature reviews on massive publications published in English, China and Japan. To today, the databases are being updated and studied for promoting our current design procedure. Any discussion on the database is welcome and can be reached by here.

Software: Design calculator for moment RWS connections

Since 2019

Dr Tsavdaridis has developed computing tools for the design of lightweight steel and steel-concrete composite perforated beams with standard and non-standard web opening shapes (FLEXiBEAM®). In principle, the SCI-P355 deign guideline is used, however, the interaction of complex failure modes in the vicinity of abnormal web opening shapes and sizes at random positions along the beam length has been fine-tuned with hundreds of thousands of FE analyses.

Similar processes have been used for the development of a calculator for the seismic-resistant design of the so-called reduced web section (RWS) moment connections using perforated beams. The work of this project is still ongoing.

Such software tools can assist designers, architects, M&E consultants, steel fabricators as well as academics/educators to fully customise their designs and evaluate the capacity of structural members as they optimise complex architectural frames through value analysis.
